I use it to back up my massive media library of 1930s and '40s movies. They're offering 10 Terabytes (TB) - no, that's not a typo, terabytes - for $75 a year. It's the most storage for the least amount of money you'll find today. Darn it! You can, however, use its web interface for manually uploading files.įor now, iDrive has a killer deal. There is no desktop Linux storage client. There's also a Linux backup option, but it's meant for Linux servers. You can use one account to back up your Windows and macOS desktops, your Android smartphone and iPhones and tablets, and your network drives. Unlike many other cloud backup services, iDrive doesn't lock you down to a single computer. Its main job is backing up small businesses, but it also works well for personal cloud storage and file sharing. IDrive is for everyone who wants a cloud backup and cloud storage in an all-in-one. The Legislature also passed a bill that offers $5 to $10 billion in taxpayer money for low-interest loans for new gas plants. As passed, the bill was capped at a still-painful $1 billion. Another, Senate Bill 7, would have saddled taxpayers with a $6 billion check for a new energy finance tool, called the Performance Credit Mechanism, which rewards gas and coal plants for simply existing, without mandating they generate more power. One bill would have offered zero-interest loans in taxpayer money to help maintain natural gas power plants. That meant the bulk of the legislative session was spent with a broad coalition of players-environmentalists, manufacturers, energy generators, and even oil and gas advocates-playing defense: stopping the legislature’s attempts to kill renewable energy and minimizing handouts to the oil and gas industry at consumers’ expense. Another bill would have raised the costs for renewable energy producers to sell their electricity in the state’s marketplace. One bill would have required renewable energy developers to obtain a state permit, an environmental impact statement from the Parks and Wildlife Department, and hold multiple community hearings-regulatory hurdles that don’t apply to natural gas and coal plants. But lawmakers proposed about a dozen bills to hamstring renewable energy production in Texas, now the nation’s largest producer of wind and solar energy. Last year renewable energy saved Texans $11 billion. Lawmakers proposed about a dozen bills to hamstring renewable energy production in Texas, now the nation’s largest producer of wind and solar energy. Instead, the Republican majority spent the last five months attempting to undermine the renewable energy industry and enrich oil and gas companies at the expense of taxpayers and consumers. “Data shows for the first time that the peak demand for electricity this summer will exceed the amount we can generate from on-demand, dispatchable power, so we will be relying on renewables to keep the lights on.”ĭespite what’s been at stake since 246 people died and 4.5 million homes and businesses lost power during Winter Storm Uri two years ago, Texas lawmakers blew another chance to fix the grid. “The Texas grid faces a new reality,” Lake said. On May 3-about a month before his resignation-Public Utility Commissioner Peter Lake warned that Texas’ demand for electricity this summer will exceed the amount that can be generated from natural gas plants. The failure that may come home to roost the fastest has to do with the state’s sagging electric grid. Here are a handful of highlights and a lot of lows. And now there’s a special session for added thrills. It wasn’t all bad, but parts were very, very bad, especially for LGBTQIA+ Texans. They didn’t even accomplish their own top priority, which was property tax cuts. Republicans, riding a wave of authoritarian successes, wasted most of the session on an assortment of cruel social policy proposals aimed at making points with their far-right supporters and, as feared, failed to address truly important things like the electric grid, gun control, and school funding. Instead, the Lege lived down to its reputation, and, for the most part, spent this session in, as Observer Senior Writer Justin Miller imagined it then, a race to the bottom that took us to depths “previously unknown and unimaginable.” Think of it as the Awful 88th. As the 88th session of the Texas Legislature opened in January, Texas Observer writers scanning the political horizon noted a faint glimmer of hope that, perhaps this time, lawmakers would locate their statesman-like qualities and, at long last, spend the spring giving relief to taxpayers, the environment, electricity-users, public schools, teachers, and other long-neglected government workers. "For some, streaming has cheapened music, and the ritual of buying and owning a record is a way to really commit to the artist and their work," Orkin said. The RIAA's 2018 year-end report said that it had fallen 34% to $698 million, the first time it had totaled less than $1 billion since 1986.ĭan Orkin, director of content at music gear marketplace Reverb, which also sells records via its site Reverb LP, said that this shift is partially a response to streaming services. At the same time, revenue from compact disc sales has steadily declined. According to data from eBay, a new vinyl record cost an average of $4.80 in 2007, and in 2017 it had gone up to $28.40, an increase of over 490%. While sales have gone up, prices have as well. Furthermore, there was an 18.5% year-over-year increase in sales of new vinyl from 2016 to 2017. Data provided to CNBC by eBay shows that sales of new and used vinyl have been steadily increasing over the past decade. But while the general public may not have anticipated a resurgence in LP sales, those who have been paying attention for the past few years likely aren't surprised. When the compact disc was introduced in 1982, it was billed as a technology that would render vinyl records obsolete. It showed that 80% of the of music industry's revenue comes from streaming, but it also showed that revenue from sales of vinyl records is on track to overtake that of compact discs by the year's end, should current trends continue. This past week, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) released its mid-year report. Offical Facebook group > nView for Vista Petition Please no abuse or nastiness toward nVidia, this is a serious thing so please be respectful, We are just trying to show nVidia that a large section of their user base feels let down by them for removing these functions and want to encourage them to help, NOT slag them off so much they will never help. This will never happen if you don`t express yourself so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE join this campaign and pass the details onto any other nVidia GF user you know and get them to sign. If you can please post links to this petition on all/any other forums you are a member of, either that or copy/paste this post into your forum and start another petition and post a link in here to it so when the campaign has got big enough we can show it to nVidia. If you have a story explaining why you want these functions added please feel free to express it, the more of these we have the more nVidia will have to take us seriously. If you also want these functions to be returned to us please post below, If you want to help us (even though you don`t use them) also sign below, If you are thinking of upgrading to a multi-monitor system SIGN NOW so hopefully the best functions will be returned by the time you do. So because of this I am starting an offical campaign and petition to request nView functionality for GeForce cards under Vista/Win7. So I and many of my friends who all use multi-screen systems are officialy annoyed at having been let down like this by our favourite manufacturor of graphics equipment and are all a bit upset and feel like we have been cheated, as in my case If I want htis back I HAVE to downgrade my OS to XP64 and lose 2Gig of RAM, it`s either that or just suffer with it and not be able to use my equipment to it`s full potential. Personally one of the big reasons I have stuck to nVidia over the years is purely because of this function, ATI`s equivelent was always nasty and not at all effective if it ever worked at all. Now these functions do exist but you have to own industry standard Quadro cards to use these functions on your home PC even though the GeForce series are fully capable of it. Now nVidia in their infinite wisdom have removed this functionality from the driver suites under Vista and Windows 7 for reasons they seem to be keeping to themselves. With Horizontal Span you can play your favourite games over three screens at such resolutions as 2048x768 for two monitors or even 3072x768 over three (which is incredible for driving games, spectacularly immersive). This would allow you to fool your pc into thinking that multiple monitors are in fact one single screen, ESPECIALLY useful in games. This included tools which defined which screens applications/windows came up on, mouse gestures for moving windows around exceedingly large desktops and many others, especially the Horizontal Span feature. For those of you who use Multiple displays you may have some idea of what I am on about, for those who don`t here is a brief overview.įor Windows XP the GeForce graphics driver suites have had a wonderfully useful group of functions built in to them for simple management of multiple monitors attatched to one PC. |
